MLM Leadership – A Person of Influence – Lesson 3

In our last lesson we took a look at the first 2 stages of influence that John Maxwell describes.  These stages were Modeling and Motivating.  This is the beginning stages of building an effective mlm or network marketing business.  Modeling and Motivating others is a must as people enter your social marketing, attraction marketing and web 2.0 funnel.

The next 2 stages are Mentoring and Multiplying.

Let’s start with stage 3 - Mentoring.

After you’ve left a good impression on someone through modeling and you’ve motivated them to be a part of your business, you must take the role of a mentor.  This means you work closely with this person and teach them step by step how to become successful.  The truth about this industry is that most fail to ever truly mentor those they work with.  Why?  First, they have not learned to effectively lead themselves.  In other words, how can a person influence another in a mentor relationship when they have not acheived success in their own life.  You can’t give what you do not have yourself.

In order to mentor another, you must learn to be disciplined in your own life.  Do you want to teach others how to successfully build their business with the latest in attraction marketing, social marketing and web 2.0?  If so, you must have applied these techniques to your own business.  You should have a web of content online so that others find you and contact you through those means.  You should be attracting leaders and seeing them join you in business before you can teach someone else how to do the same.

If you want to be a mentor, you must have a mentor yourself.  If you want to teach others to succeed, you must learn how to succeed yourself.

Stage 4 - Multiply

This is the exciting stage that is the major payoff if you have effectively modeled, motivated and mentored others.  Your influence no longer stops with those your personally know, but extends to those you lead and those they lead and on and on.  This is one of the best things about an mlm or network marketing business.  If you become an effective leader and influencer of others, you will multiply your success through other leaders and they will multiply through other leaders, etc…  Before long, you will have developed a growing organization that pays you a handsome residual income.

The ability to multiply all starts with modeling.  In my opinon, the best way to model today is through the use of the internet and more specifically by applying proven techniques through attraction marketing, social marketing and web 2.0.

Becoming a Person of Influence – The First 2 Stages of Influence

There are stages of influence that you must progress through.  Maxwell argues for 4 stages of influence.  These are stages that you’ll move through with a person as they consider you for a potential business partner.  We’ll cover the first 2 stages today and the next 2 stages in the next lesson.

Stage 1 – Modeling

People are initially influenced by what they see.  Think about this with regards to your first impression with people and your business.  The majority of my business is built through online marketing strategies such as web 2.0, social marketing and attraction marketing.  This stage of influence is huge because I have 1 chance with someone to make a good first impression.  My profile picture, my content, my video or audio, etc… all determine if someone will seek to know me more.

Think about that with your current online presentation.  Would people see your capture page, myspace profile or youtube video and desire to know more about you?  Are you smiling in your pictures?  Does your content lead them to believe that you are successful?

Stage 2 – Motivating

Modeling can be a powerful form of influence in a positive or negative form, but if you really want to see people influenced and desire to work with you in your mlm, affiliate marketing or direct sales company, you must learn to motivate them.  This means that you will start to influence people on an emotional level.  People will begin to identify with you and believe in themselves at the same time.  Influence through motivation is a must for attraction marketing, web 2.0 and social marketing.

Once again, consider what you have in place that connects with people on an emotional level.  Are people moved by what they see, read or watch in your current marketing setup?  I’m not talking about bringing them to tears or laughter every time, but are others identifying with you?

That’s the introduction to the first 2 stages of influence.  The next 2 stages will be presented in the next post.  Remember this statement.

Becoming a Person of Influence – Introduction to Influence

So many people who are practicing web 2.0, attraction marketing and social marketing are going about it in the wrong way.  They fail to realize the power of influence and shrink back to much less effective techniques such as advertising.  This is a huge mistake and a detriment to their online business.

Take a look at this list of people:

Dan Rather

Madonna

Rex Harris

Pablo Picasso

Eric Walker

Tiger Woods

That is a diverse group of people.  They come from different backgrounds, religious beliefs and political views.  What do they all have in common?  Every person on that list is a person of influence.  There are 2 concepts I’ll share from Maxwell today and then we’ll move to the 4 stages of influence tomorrow.

1. Everyone has influence.

No matter who you are, what your background is, what education you have received or how many people you know, you have the potential to influence others.  If you desire to succeed in your mlm business, affiliate marketing program, direct sales or network marketing company, you must become a person of influence.

The speed and effectiveness of your online or offline business will be in direct proportion to your ability to influence others.  You must learn how to become a person on influence.

I practice web 2.0, attraction marketing and social marketing every day in my online business.  I’m never without people to build a relationship with.  As I do this I often get calls or emails from a potential prospect.  Each time this person tells me what attracted them to me.  It could have been something I said in a video or blog post.  Sometimes they like that I talk about family.  Whatever the case, something I said or did influenced them.  My consistent activity in building relationship with others through the model of marketing I teach results in my consistent influence in the lives of others.

2. Your influence is not the same with every person.

We influence others on some level each and every day.  We are also influenced by others at different levels.

Consider 4 or 5 people that you do business with.  Are there some that tend to agree with your suggestions or ideas?  Are there others who typically don’t?  Think about your family.  Your kids are influenced by you in a much different way than your spouse.

An example of this would be with my son Caleb and my wife Kate.  When I make certain noises or faces in front of my son, he flashes me that heart melting smile that only a 6 month old can.  If I were to make those same faces and noises directed at my wife, she would probably give me the good ole’ eye roll technique accompanied with the statement, “You are nuts.”  There is a difference in the influence I have with my son and wife.

Because of the fact that everyone has influence and our influence is not the same with every person, we must be devoted to learning how to influence others.  This is not to be confused with manipulation, which will break trust and influence, but an honest desire to take others from where they are to where they need to go.

Maxwell defines leadership as influence.  Leadership is your ability to influence others.  Are you a leader?  Are you following a person who can teach you effective leadership skills?

Becoming a Person of Influence – Why do I need to become a person of influence?

The current buzz in our industry is about web 2.0 technology, social marketing and attraction marketing.  All 3 of these ideas are exciting and beneficial to the budding business builder.  All of these are means to an end.  That end involving a solid business being built that will provide a good income for the home based business owner.

So, what does influence have to do with it?  If you want to effectively utilize the latest marketing techniques, you must learn that you have influence on others and how to effectively channel your influence.  Think about the leaders in our industry.  Every person in our industry who is making a lot of money all have influence.  Eben Pagan, Mike Dillard, Ann Sieg, Russell Brunson, Joe Shroeder and Mike Klingler.  All of these people have developed a life changing income from their ability to influence others.

The person who influences others is the one who builds the most solid business, mlm, network marketing or affiliate marketing business.  The person who ignores influence continues to settle for mediocrity.  One thing I’d like to point out here is that quality is more important than quantity.  If you focus on the quality of your influence, the quantity will come.  What does that mean?  It means that you start by effectively influencing a few.  Those few will lead to a few more, and so on and so on until your life and business will blossom as a result of your influence.

This series of lessons will focus on helping you understand influence and equip you to better influence others.

APPLICATION

Take a look at your current online setup.  Are you effectively influencing others through your use of web 2.0, attraction marketing and social marketing?  Are people joining your business?

Take a piece of paper and list out everything that deals with your ability to influence others online.  Place a number between 1 & 10 next to each piece of information.  1 being no little to no influence on others, 10 being a primary source of your ability to influence others.  Grade yourself.

At the top - Free training, reports, capture pages, etc…

1. Renegade University - The basic version of this system, created by Mike Klinger, teaches attraction marketing.  There are several lead capture pages associated with the system and also some free video training.

2. 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing - This is a free ebook written by Ann Sieg.  I encourage those who have continued to fail in the network marketing industry to read this free ebook.  Very eye opening.

3. Magnetic Sponsoring - This capture page offers 7 free videos that teach the process of attraction marketing.

4. YourBizGrows - This is a free lead capture system that I created that will advertise your current business opportunity and help make you some extra cash in the process.

All of the things listed above are exactly what I advertise at the top of my funnel.  I advertise these systems through my blog, you tube videos, traffic exchanges, free advertising sites, etc…  All of these systems pour into the next section and each have their own funnel.

Middle of the funnel - Quality reports, ebooks, training systems, etc…

1. The Renegade Network Marketer - This is one of the best ebooks I’ve ever read on our industry.  It’s only $67 and you make $33.50 for each sale.  Even if you only have 1 person currently in your home business, they need to read this.  A lot of the content that I draw from for my funnel, blog, free training, etc… comes from this ebook.

2. Renegade University Professional - This is the same initial page as the Renegade University page above.  The twist is that when you join the professional level for $39 a month, you gain access to the best web 2.0 and attraction marketing training center out there, in my opinion.  There are close to 100 videos and growing.  They will walk you through how to blog, create videos, squidoo, hubpages, social bookmarking, facebook, myspace, etc…  Spend 90 days in this system and do what it teaches and you will generate your own free leads from now on.  Plus, anyone you refer as a professional, you will make $18 per month/per person.  This will add up to a nice residual income.

3. Magnetic Sponsoring - The Book - This is the ebook that turned the ship around for me.  I went from limited success to full time with the techniques taught.  This is an actual book that you receive in the mail and will draw on for content and training over and over.

4. Building on a Budget - This lead capture system offers free videos upfront with a backend sale of the Building on a Budget course.  This lead capture page does a great job of pulling leads and this book is also a physical book that you receive in the mail.

Bottom of the funnel - Higher Priced Items

1. Personal Mentoring - From time to time I will personally take on a client and help jump start the process of branding themselves.  I setup a lead capture page for them and spend one on one time walking them through the process of setting up their own funnel.

2.  MIM Online Magazine - This is one of the mastermind groups I belong to which helps me continue to grow with the help of a personal mentor.  If you don’t have a personal mentor to help you succeed, you are not acheiving success as fast as you could.

Finally - The other end of the funnel - Your Current Business Opportunity

Everyone who is in a home based business desires to have more people to prospect with their business.  In fact there is an entire industry built around this.  From home business leads to opportunity seeker leads to double opt in leads to mlm leads and network marketing leads, etc…  There are infinite number of choices when it comes to purchasing leads.

Is buying leads truly effective though? 

Yes and no.  If a person has a significant monthly budget to purchase leads and they contact these leads on a regular basis through an ongoing marketing process of calling, emailing, direct mail, etc. they can be successful with this process.  The hiccup comes when they tell the new person they just sponsored that in order to be successful, they have to purchase all of the same resources.  An effective lead campaign with all of the proper tools to go along with it can cost $500-$5000 a month.  I’m not joking.  The return on investment can be delayed until 3-6 months down the line as your income grows.  Many who join our industry and take this route for a few months until they have no money left or max out their credit cards.  Then they have to quit and lose their entire investment.  This stinks!

Another issue in the entire lead purchasing arena is how many times one biz opp lead is sold.  Here’s how it works.  There is a company that generates the leads.  This company then sells this new lead to a lead broker.  This lead broker then turns around and sells this lead to several lead providers.  After each of the lead providers has sold this lead between 7-8 times, they will then sell these leads in bulk to other broker and lead providers of bulk leads.  Then the process is repeated again.  So, how many times can one lead be sold?

I tested this process for myself.  I saw an ad on TV one time that was advertising a home based business.  I opted in at the website that was shown.  Within the next week or two I was contacted by around 8 people from different work at home business opportunities.  These 8 people paid anywhere from $5-$15 for my information.  That was just the beginning.  For the next 6 months I was emailed or called over 150 times.  I used a specific email address so I could track it.  Since that original six months, my email address has probably been sold another 200-500 times, resulting in 1000’s of contacts.  No joke.

So, if purchasing leads can result in this many issues, what should a person who has a limited budget do?

My suggestion is to learn how to generate your own free mlm leads and free network marketing leads.  Notice I didn’t say to generate your own biz opp leads.   I generally don’t market to the new person looking for a home based business.  They are usually just poking around and testing things.  I want people who are opportunity buyers.  Those who have already raised their hand at some point to say they wanted to be a part of this industry.

Why attract mlm and network marketing leads?

1. A person already in the industry has decided they want to make extra income online.  Many times they haven’t found the right home business mentor or coach to teach them.  They need an effective sponsor who will teach them marketing skills.

2. A person who is already in the mlm or network marketing industry understands that in order to build a business they will have to treat it like a business.  There is usually less of a learning curve with the experienced home business person.  They have either failed at several businesses and don’t know why or they had some issue with their current company and are looking for a new one.  Also, and you can mark my words on this.  Most people who are currently in an mlm or network marketing company will be looking for a new one in 60-90 days.  Since a person joins a home business every 8 seconds, this is a huge amount of people to build a relationship with through attraction marketing tools.

3. A person who is already in the industry usually has a list of contacts from their previous marketing efforts or through knowing others in the industry too.  Do you want to see the growth of your current business go faster?  Attract a decent marketer who will bring 35-50 people with him or her when they join your business.  This is not difficult either.  I’ve done this in 3 mlm companies and seen great residual checks from this technique.

So, the answer in my mind is to generate your own mlm or network marketing leads.  These techniques are taught by all the “gurus” in the industry such as:

Mike Klingler

Ann Sieg

Mike Dillard

All of these people and more teach attraction marketing and using an effective funnel to attract those already in the industry.  My personal favorite is MarketingMerge and the Renegade University Professional System.  This is the system I wish I had built.  Mike Klinger walks people step by step through how to use the latest web 2.0 and attraction marketing techniques.  He uses camtasia video and literally will help you set up a huge web of lead generation and traffic for any work at home opportunity.

Welcome to my new blog. I will say that it came through much trial and error. I wanted to use wordpress and use it on my existing JeremyHenderson.com site. Little did I know that I would need to install my website on linux hosting instead of windows. Anyway, I’m here!

My name is Jeremy Henderson and I’m a full time home business mentor. Like many who will read this blog, I’ve been through my ups and downs in the home business industry. I’ve spent an abundance of resources (time and money) on my education. I’ve learned from everyone that would take the time to teach through their system, ebook or even mlm or network marketing business. Yes, I’ve joined others in a business opportunity just for the opportunity to learn from them. I have had several home business mentors of my own and now it’s time to return the favor. That’s what this blog will be about.

I will be sharing tips, free home business training, attraction marketing tools and training, lead generation skills, teaching on how to get free leads, free mlm leads and network marketing leads, as well as the occasional review of opportunities and tools in our industry. For me, success in your own home business requires education in 3 areas.

1. Mindset - I believe that you must have the right thinking patterns to be successful. I don’t teach a lot of mumbo-jumbo type things, but practical ways to train your mind for the task ahead.

2. Marketing Skills - There is a huge percentage of people who fail in their own home business. Why? Well I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that they never treat it like a business. A business requires marketing and marketing cannot be learned overnight. You need an effective home business mentor to teach you how to present yourself professionally both on the internet and in offline situations. I could go on and on about this right now, but I’ll save it for future training and posts.

3. Discipline - Do you want success? Do you have the mindset and are starting to learn the skills necessary to succeed? Great, now you need to do this: PLAN TO WORK and then WORK YOUR PLAN. Many in an online business spend the majority of their time checking email, reading the latest training and/or surfing the web. They may have the mindset and skills to be successful, but they have no plan of action. Without a plan of action there will be no action. Duh! That’s where a good home business mentor will come in and help someone develop a plan and then hold them accountable to working that plan.
